Despite what you may have heard on Twitter, the X-Men have never shied away from putting homosexual characters front and center. It’s old news – not brave and certainly not daring.
When presented organically it’s accepted and readers rarely bat an eye. What bothers us is when an overzealous writer with obviously no editorial oversight is allowed to twist a character into their own vision subsequently ignoring continuity.
Thing is – it’s happening so much now, most of us are over it. That or we just stop reading. The latter is happening more than they’d like to admit in the books, but now it’s happening in the movies that they are inspiring. Josh Boone, the director of the upcoming X-Men franchise spin-off movie, The New Mutants, told Entertainment Weekly that it will contain a beautiful love story between two of its female characters.
If you’ve seen any of the trailers, more than likely you’ve guessed that those two are probably Rahne Sinclair and Danielle ‘Dani’ Moonstar. Funny enough, had they teased Magik instead it probably wouldn’t be a stretch. Out of all the females in this movie, her sexuality has historically been the most enigmatic. At least among those that actually obsess over things like that in a semi-paranormal-sci-fi comic book.
